Description

One of the all-time classics, the Volkswagen Beetle can also lay claim to be the most important car ever built - certainly in sheer volume of production the Beetle has reached incredible levels, with more than 20 million sold around the globe. Designed by Dr. Ferdinand Porsche around a rugged air-cooled four-cylinder engine in a rear-engined layout, the Beetle was basic, cheap and reliable which made it increasingly popular in a post-war world hungry for automobiles. Launched in 1945 as an 1100, the Beetle underwent almost constant development; a 1200cc engine was used from the early 1950s and this was redesigned in 1960 for more power. An all-synchromesh gearbox was adopted at the same time while the bodywork was gradually improved as well - most noticeably the small oval window was enlarged in August 1957 to improve visibility. Australian assembly of Beetles from CKD kits began in 1954 and by 1962, Volkswagen was the third biggest manufacturer of cars here after Holden and Ford, exporting cars across the South East Asia region. Innovations continued into the early 1960s, with larger taillights, seat belt mounting points, a better heater and spring-loaded bonnet for mid-1962. Beautifully made and loaded with charm, classic one-owner Beetles like the car offered here are becoming impossible to find in such original condition, making this a superb opportunity for Volkswagen collectors.

History

  • Australian-made 1961 VW Beetle
  • Cream on Cream period colours
  • Paint & trim refreshed
  • One-owner car
VW’s Beetle needs no introduction and for decades was a very familiar sight on Australian roads. Nowadays these ‘original’ Beetles are rarely seen, and one-owner examples are just about extinct. Here we have one such example, owned from new by the same family and with just an indicated 41,176 miles! Its cream paint has been refreshed at some stage and its chrome body embellishments show the patina of age. Inside the two-tone cream vinyl upholstery is in good shape, and there is new headlining and carpets. The original radio is fitted, as are the original steel wheels with hubcaps. Overall it presents as a nice and complete ’61 Beetle that could happily be used as is or be improved further. As we often say, where are you going to find another one like this? Previously on full Victorian registration, it is being offered for sale unregistered.

Note: Shannons advise that all potential buyers research all vehicles before purchase to authenticate originality.
