The Shannons Story

Shannons was the brainchild of the late Robert Shannon who created an insurance business in the early seventies run by enthusiasts, for enthusiasts.

Shannons insurance products are specially tailored to the individual needs of motoring enthusiasts and relies on direct contact with clients rather than through other agents or brokers.

Today, as part of the Suncorp Group, Shannons has offices in all state capitals, the ACT and Northern Territory. Across Australia Shannons is the first choice of motoring enthusiasts when it comes to insuring their special cars, motorcycles and homes, as well as the day to day cars of owners.

What do you like most about working at Shannons?

I really enjoy working for Shannons as I have been able to continue to combine promotions and marketing with my love of cars into one job. Prior to working with Shannons I worked in promotions and my hobby was cars and car racing. I still race my Mustang occasionally and enjoying a huge variety of promotions and car shows that we now Sponsor. The most rewarding part of my job has been the 100's or is it 1000's? of Customers that come up to me to say hi at events and many have become friends ...after nearly 14 years it really has become a Shannons Club!

If you could own any car, what would it be & why?

The car that I would love to own even though it's not able to be driven on the road is a factory 935 Porsche Race car. It's the most awesome looking Porsche ever made, because under all the flared guards, wings and Spoilers is the remnants of 911 Porsche Road going car.

What aspect of motoring do you enjoy the most?

I love the touring car masters & Historic car racing. As an entrant or just as a spectator... But am currently enjoying the latest craze 'Coffee and cars' I am a Coffee nut and it's a chance to drive my 911Sc Porsche to the event.

If you could own any car, what would it be & why?

1970 Dodge Challenger! Basically anything American and MOPAR would be the ideal car. Has to be Black on Black and I wouldn't say no to it being Supercharged. Sadly I need to win lotto and build a bigger garage!

What aspect of motoring do you enjoy the most?

I love everything about motoring but one of the best parts would be Motorsport and sharing your interest with others. I have found some great mates over the years through different motorsport events and all having the same interest together is what makes it so fun! I always walk away from events wanting something different... even one time wanted a Jag!

What do you like most about working at Shannons?

For me, my car is more than a hobby, a passion, she's a part of my family. Our customers feel the same. Being able to understand that their cars are a huge part of their lives means we have some great conversations! I love hearing about the histories of their cars, what they've done to them over the years and the experiences that they share together at shows, cruises and events. I learn something new every day, our customers are often experts with their chosen passion and are more than happy to share their knowledge with me.

What cars/bikes do you currently own?

My show/cruise car is a 1971 LC Torana called Gwen and my daily drive is a 2001 N16 Pulsar

If you could own any car, what would it be & why?

I adore Toranas. Growing up with them in the family and watching them down at the drags at Adelaide International Raceway, I was hooked from a young age. As much as I'd love to say my dream car would be an exotic supercar, it would be an original LJ Torana XU-1 in Chateau Mauve. I'll probably never have one, but there will always be a spare parking space in my shed just in case.

What aspect of motoring do you enjoy the most?

I'm a very sociable person so for me I enjoy cruises and shows the most. Nothing beats getting up early in the morning, watching the sun rise and cruising through the Adelaide Hills in the Torana to a car show. I spend the day learning about different cars and making new friends. Getting to catch up with everyone in show/cruise season is always exciting. Some of my favourite events are in the hills at Strathalbyn, the wine districts in the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale and the big cruises like Jaf's Last Cruise are always the highlight of the year.
