Description

The Series 3 Land Rovers continued the great traditions set by the Series 1 and 2s that preceded it. Introduced in 1971 it was offered initially in three body-styles from the factory, with two and four door wagons and a utility tray the options. As it evolved further variants were offered to various markets, to be built on the basic cab/chassis. Around 440,000 Series 3 Landies were built during its reign, with production finishing up in 1985. The Series 3 carried over the wing-mounted headlights introduced during the Series 2A, but the biggest change to the appearance was the adoption of a plastic grille in place of the metal one used before. 2.25 litre Petrol and Diesel four-cylinder engines were offered, along with a 2.6 litre six and 3.5 V-8, matched to a solid, dual-range 4-speed manual transmission.

History

  • 1981 Land Rover Series 3
  • Long Wheel Base (LWB) flat tray configuration
  • Lift-off hardtop
  • 2.6 litre six-cylinder petrol engine
  • No Reserve
Quite how many variants of the ubiquitous Land Rover have been produced since its birth in 1947 may never been known but what we do know is that this example is a 1981 Series 3 flat-tray utility, built on long wheelbase (LWB) soft-top cab/chassis. Its white hardtop roof is removeable and has sliding rear windows that open to the flat drop-side utility tray, which is of wooden construction. It’s all finished in ‘army’ green with a lift-off white hardtop roof, and inside it’s all workmanlike olive vinyl with rubber floor matting. The interior is in good condition while the paint does show some patina. It’s powered by a 2600cc straight six-cylinder petrol engine, which was rebuilt in February this year at a cost of $2650. That’s mated to a four-speed dual-range manual transmission driving all four wheels. The bumpers are aluminium and there’s a towbar. Very clean underneath, it indicates a recorded 91,000km at the time of cataloguing. A well looked after workhorse, this 1981 Land Rover Series 3 was previously on full Tasmanian registration, however the Land Rover will be offered for sale unregistered and with No Reserve.
