The Karmann Ghia was a clever marketing exercise by Volkswagen, combining stylish Italian coachwork from the Ghia studios with the unbreakable mechanicals of the Beetle. The brainchild of Wilhelm Karmann, who also built the Beetle Cabriolet, the Karmann Ghia was launched at the 1955 Frankfurt Motor Show and immediately proved a sales success with a public willing to sacrifice some performance for reliability and inexpensive running costs. The Karmann Ghia had a higher top speed than the Beetle thanks to the slippery shape, and handling was similarly improved thanks to the lower centre of gravity. Inside, the cabin seemed more special thanks to some upgrades including a large centrally mounted clock, with useable rear seats and plenty of space. Today, these attractive little Volkswagens have become highly sought after by enthusiasts who appreciate the curvaceous styling, excellent build quality and charming ‘50s period details.
