If one product came to symbolise Italy's post-war economic and social resurgence it would be the Vespa scooter. Idolised by the young people for generations, made famous by celebrities like Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday, and produced the world over in millions, the Vespa scooter underwent constant improvement and the 160GS offered here was introduced in 1962, becoming the flagship of the model range. With modern styling and class-leading performance, the new GS boasted a more powerful engine, a more comfortable ride and better equipment levels. By increasing capacity to 158.53cc (with a bore and stroke of 58 x 60mm), the scooter could reach a top speed of 60 mph and the engine itself was significantly upgraded, with a stronger crankshaft, advanced Dellorto SI27/23 carburettor and improved internal transmission components. The 160GS is considered one of the best looking Vespas ever made, with lovely details including the chrome decoration on the front mudguard and lockable luggage compartment set the rear bodyshell above the rear stop and brake lights. All were finished in grey-white with pale grey saddles, with highly polished handlebars (featuring a new steering lock) and a fan-shaped instrument cluster. The 160GS proved successful, with some 60,000 built between 1960 and 1962. Today, the rugged Vespa is an ideal choice as a commuter vehicle, being cheap to run and maintain and with so much more style than the bland plastic products of today.
