The staple of Norton production during the 1930s and 1950s was the Model 50, a touring model originally designed by Edgar Franks in 1933 and in essence, a smaller-engined Model 18 sharing the same diamond frame and most other components. A twin ported version, the Type 55, was announced in 1933. Powered by an ohv single-cylinder displacing 348cc, the Model 50 was reintroduced in 1955 with several changes, including higher compression ratio (of 7.3:1) and AMC's gearbox. In 1957 further refinements saw the Model 50 gain a new rear hub and brake back plate, new cams, integral push-rod tubes and an improved frame. More significantly, Norton adopted the famous 'Featherbed' frame in 1959 (featuring Road holder front forks) along with various other improvements, including better electrics thanks to a Lucas RM15 crank-mounted alternator in place of the magneto/dynamo of previous models and coil ignition. In 1961 the frame design was further refined and new 'slimline' styling introduced but the Model 50s production run finally came to an end in 1963, although the designation was later used on a rebadged Matchless G3/AJS Model 16 in 1965-1966. The Norton Model 50 was a very under stressed motorcycle and with the Featherbed frame, had brilliant handling along with classic looks. Few original Model 50s survive, with many modified into so-called Tritons with Triumph motors and like all Norton's, they are keenly sought after by collectors.
