Before the Galaxie took over in 1959 as Ford's top of the line model, the Fairlane (named after Henry Ford's estate, Fair Lane, in Dearborn, Michigan) had been the most luxurious Ford available from the time of its introduction in 1955. The 1960 Fairlane saw a shift away from fins and chrome of the 1950s to a flatter, sharper look clearly influenced by the fledgling Space Age and was drew heavily from Ford's Quicksilver concept car. The most prominent feature stylistically was a horizontal fin that ran the full length of the car. Ford Australia began assembling and selling Fairlane's locally from September 1959, using CKDs sourced from Canada but essentially the same as their North American counterparts and it replaced the Customline in Ford's local line-up. Although Australian-made Fairlanes all came with a 332-cid V8, the American public had a wider choice of power units, ranging from a 223-cid six, 292-cid V8 and a 352-cid V8. Domestic buyers also enjoyed a choice of body styles, including four-door Town and two-door Business and Club Sedans, with the latter being offered here. The 1960 Fairlane, long forgotten by collectors, is a rare and very cool American classic and perfect for someone searching for something a little different.
