One of the most collectible of all Fifties American classics, the Skyliner was the undoubted star of the Fairlane range, with a fully-retractable folding roof designed by Ford engineer Gil Spears. Introduced in 1957 and available for just three short years, the Skyliner was based on the full-size Fairlane model and boasted a complex mechanism that automatically folded the roof and stowed it neatly in the boot of the car. Powered by no less than three motors driving four lift jacks, the roof certainly robbed the car of virtually all boot space and the fuel tank had to be relocated under the rear seat as a result. Three engines were available in 1957; the 190 hp base 272-cid unit or optional 292-cid and 312-cid "Thunderbird Special" engines plus a choice of a three-speed manual (with overdrive optional) or three-speed Ford-O-Matic automatic transmission. Luxury features included a standard electric clock. The world's only fully retracting hardtop at the time, the Skyliner still draws a crowd today when the roof is raised or lowered. Just 20,766 Skyliners were made in 1957 and today good examples fetch top prices in the US and are eagerly sought after by collectors.
