The dramatically shaped Sting Ray fastback was launched in 1963, with a series of bigger and better engines being introduced in subsequent years. By 1966 the Stingray (as it was now known) was offered with the ultimate 427ci big-block option, which came standard with the L39's 390bhp but could be had with 11:1 compression and a rousing 425bhp in L72 form. The big-block motor was distinguished by the 'power' bulge in the bonnet and really moved the Corvette into the big league of hyper performance.
