One of the so-called kei cars, that breed of Japanese microcars peculiar to Japan, the Autozam was made by parent company Mazda from October 1992 until 1994 to compete with the likes of Honda's Beat and the Suzuki Cappuccino. Looking like a scaled down Honda NSX, the distinctive bodywork featured gull-wing doors and this pocket rocket came in just two exterior colours, Classic Red or Siberia Blue. The Autozam was powered by a sophisticated little 657cc engine, mid-mounted for optimum handling characteristics and bristling with technology like four valves per cylinder, a turbocharger and intercooler to develop 47kW at 6500rpm. Driving through a five-speed gearbox, the Autozam had sophisticated suspension utilising Macpherson struts and disc brakes all round. The diminutive Autozam is one of a handful in Australia and, with a cult following today, is certain to become a collector's item in the future.
