The Ford Bronco 4WD was assembled by Ford Australia from 1981 to 1987 and was received enthusiastically by Ford enthusiasts, many of whom could remember a Mainline utility or a Ranch Wagon in their family history: never forget it was Ford Australia’s engineer Lew Bandt who invented the coupe utility! The Bronco was offered with either the 4.1-litre six-cylinder engine or the Cleveland 5.8-litre V8. There was the standard Custom variant, priced from $15,402, and the XLT. An extensive list of options included air-conditioning and a laminated windscreen. The top-spec XLT brought attractive two-toning, cloth trim, front bumper overriders, bodyside protection mouldings, rear mudflaps, those trademark styled white wheels, full instrumentation and imitation wood panelling in the cabin. Fully kitted out, a Bronco XLT V8 auto could hit $20K when a base Ford Falcon cost $8745. While the Bronco was promoted by Ford Australia as the ultimate go-anywhere machine, it also proved immensely popular with buyers who wanted to tow a big van or boat, a role for which no other vehicle on the market could rival it in the 1980s.
