Established in 1987, Holden Special Vehicles (HSV) was Holden’s officially designated performance vehicle partner. It produced a series of low-volume performance models across the Holden range, though most commonly based on the Commodore platform. One of HSV’s best-known badges is the Clubsport, which debuted as a VN-model in 1990 and continued through to the Gen-F of 2017. As the performance brand’s entry-level model, it was also its biggest seller. Produced from 1991 to 1993, the VP-model was the second iteration of the second generation of the Commodore and introduced mainly cosmetic and feature changes to the outgoing VN-model. Semi-trailing arm IRS became standard on Calais and Commodore SS models and dramatically improved ride and handling. ABS brakes were also introduced in the VP range, while additional security included an ignition-disabling device and a driver's door deadlock. Power mirrors were also now a standard feature. With the release of the VP series, the entry-level HSV Clubsport and luxury Senator were both equipped with the 180 kW V8. LSDs were standard fitment across all HSV models. In mid 1993 HSV produced a limited run of 50 special edition Clubsports with the same driveline and brakes as the GTS, and these were dubbed Clubsport 5000i. Only available in Alaskan White, the 5000i featured grey sideskirts and matching paintouts on the front and rear bars, a colour-coded rear number plate garnish and grey P-type Clubsport wheels. 5000i decals and the car’s build number completed the exterior graphics, while it came with ‘Langton’ front sports seats and a cabin trimmed in blue ‘Waratah’ fabric. Under the bonnet the 5000i was fitted with the high-performance GTS’ 200kW ‘black’ motor and HSV's premium brake package.
HSV tuned stainless steel exhaust and extractors and an 85L long-range fuel tank were also part of the 5000i specification. Clubsports continue to be popular among Australian muscle car enthusiasts today and interest is growing in all its models.
