With the proliferation of models offered by Mercedes-Benz, the CLK-Class was launched in 1997, combining the underpinnings of the compact C-Class with general styling and trim levels of the more upmarket E-Class.  Sold in both coupe and convertible forms, the CLK filled a niche between the more overtly sporting SLK and the ultra luxurious (and expensive) CL-Class.  Initially launched in four-cylinder CLK200 or supercharged CLK230 versions, a V6 model badged the CLK320 was added to the line-up in 1997, followed by an even more powerful CLK430 with a 4.3-litre V8 under the bonnet. Powered by a 165kW SOHC 3.2-litre V6, the CLK320 was capable of reaching 100 km/h from a standing start in a very respectable 7.4 seconds, paired to a seamlessly smooth five-speed automatic transmission that can be shifted manually. A second generatation CLK was launched in 2003 featuring heavily revised styling in keeping with the new corporate ‘face’ adopted across the range.  Two trim levels were available – Elegance or Avantgarde – and despite being based on the smaller C-Class platform, the interior finishes matched the more expensive E-Class, meaning leather upholstery, burl walnut finish and better carpets. In Cabriolet guise, the multi-layer soft top was automatically raised or lowered at the push of a button (including remotely), provided class-leading noise and temperature insulation when raised and the captivating soundtrack offered by the sonorous V6 when lowered.  Two decades on the CLK is still a remarkably enjoyable car to drive and and now offers exceptional value for money, particularly in 320 guise.
