Honda has been dominant in international motorcycling for decades and no machine better exemplifies the firm’s commitment to the sport than the V4-powered VFR750 RC30 and its RC45 successor, which arrived in 1994. With their high-tech V4 engines, handmade chassis and multiple global racing championships, they are true collectibles. These special versions of the VFR750 won the Australian Superbike Championship in 1993 (Troy Corser, RC30), 1994 (Anthony Gobert, RC45) and 1995 (Kirk McCarthy, RC45). In 1995 the Australian Winfield Racing Team planned to build 25 exact replicas of that year’s winner, resplendent in its red and white Winfield livery. But when the Australian Government banned all tobacco advertising in motorsport, the Winfield Racing Team was disbanded. By this stage just 16 of the planned 25 motorcycles had been produced, meaning that these magnificent replicas are even rarer than they might have been. Motorcycle News summed the RC45 up thus: ‘The Honda RC45 is arguably one of the best made motorcycles of all time, typical of the flagship motorcycles made when engineers were still in charge at Honda. Apart from the effects of time, extreme weather, or owner neglect, it's very unlikely that a Honda RC45 will break down or rust to bits. An undoubted classic built to last a lifetime.’
