1972 Ford Falcon XA GT Coupe (Rebodied)

Description

On its debut in early 1972, the XA was the most Australian Falcon to date, a car designed specifically for our local market and with no US equivalent of any kind. And as far as Ford Australia was concerned it was a case of – to quote the most popular song of 1972, ‘Goodbye Miss American Pie’! Sometime early in 1968 the decision had been taken to discontinue the US Falcon. Thus it was that in May of that year, Jack Telnack, Brian Rossi and Allan Jackson flew to the States to begin work in collaboration with senior Dearborn stylists on what was to become the XA Falcon. Despite being partly influenced by the Ford Torino, the final design was unique, sleek and beautifully balanced. It joined the HQ Holden and VH Valiant. Some observers believed the Holden looked a little too small, while most thought the Valiant overly large, while the XA Falcon seemed just right. The long bonnet/short tail style contained echoes of the ‘Mustang-bred’ XR of 1966.  The aircraft style cockpit was highly styled and the new Falcon was an immediate hit with prospective buyers. As for the GT, this was a more refined and quieter machine than its illustrious predecessors but delivered the same performance as the acclaimed XY GT.
