Ford's legendary GT40 was the result of the American giant's failed takeover of Ferrari in the early 1960s, with Henry Ford determined to beat the Italians at the event they had previously dominated, the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Based on the Lola Mark VI, a new sports-racing prototype was developed by Ford Advanced Vehicles in time for the 1964 season, with a small-block 289ci V8 rear mounted in the advanced monocoque frame. Standing just 40 inches high, hence the name GT40, the first taste of victory came on the banking at Daytona in 1965 but it was the Mark II - with a 7-litre engine jointly developed by Shelby American and Holman and Moody - that finally brought victory at Le Mans in 1966 with Kiwis Chris Amon and Bruce McLaren sharing the laurels. In 1967 the J-Car derivative notched up another win at Le Mans, after which the official Ford GT program was wound up, although Gulf-backed GT40s went on to score memorable back-to-back wins at Le Mans in 1968 and 1969. Beautiful, successful, rare (less than 100 were made) and now ultra-desirable, it is little wonder the GT40 has become a legend to legions of Ford and racing fans generally. With genuine cars worth seven figure sums, ownership is well beyond the means of most of us and many enthusiasts have turned to replicas to provide all the thrills of ownership at a realistic price. Australia is indeed fortunate to have some of the highest quality components and workmanship available to build a top-notch replica GT40 and the car on offer here is without doubt just that, utilising components manufactured by the award winning Roaring Forties company in Braeside (Victoria).

- 2020 Ford GT40 replica
- Ford Coyote power, Audi transaxle
- No expense spared

Stunning. That’s the only word to describe this beautiful 2020 Ford GT40 replica. The life-long dream of an enthusiast, no expense was spared in the build of this GT40 replica, which is based on one of the highly-regarded Roaring Forties kits. Presented in immaculate condition, the fibreglass body is finished in a bright yellow with white GT40 sill stripes, and it sits on a set of purposeful BRM 17in grey-finished alloys. Underneath, the GT40 is built around a fabricated MS tubular welded chassis, which has been powdercoated to reflect the car’s quality finish everywhere. The engine is a 5.0 litre 32-valve Ford Coyote V8 hooked up to a six-speed manual Audi transaxle. The engine bay also has a fire suppression system. Suspension is via fabricated wishbones and cast aluminium uprights front and rear, using Shokworks coilovers. Brakes are AP Racing calipers clasping grooved discs. Inside, the cockpit design remains faithful to the racing original with a right hand gearchange, however there are a few concessions to its use as a road car. The trim is in black leather, with the GT40’s iconic metal-ringed vent holes in the deeply-dished seats, a theme also carried over to the door cards. The Smiths instrumentation is extensive, there’s a rear-view camera and air-conditioning, and black carpets help quell some of the engine and road noise. A Mongoose immobiliser provides security. It comes with a big folder of reference materials on the build and mechanicals, and a USB stick of build images. Everything is finished to a very high standard and presents as brand new. not a surprise given its odometer indicates just 11 kilometres! It all adds up to make this one of the nicest Ford GT40 replicas we have seen. It’s hard to imagine you’d find a better one. Previously on full Victorian registration, this 2020 Ford GT40 replica is being offered for sale here unregistered.
