Ford Australia invented the coupe utility in 1933 and these distinctive V8-powered workhorses quickly found favour in the bush. The Customline-based Ford Mainline V8 utes of the 1950s were the most powerful money could buy and were precursors of the highly fashionable Falcon XR8 utes. (In the US the ‘Mainline’ nameplate was used on sedans.) Mainlines were assembled in Ford Australia’s Geelong plant alongside Customlines, Consuls, Zephyrs and Prefects.
