No doubt taking cues from the iconic Jaguar E-Type, Triumph released the six-cylinder GT6 fastback coupe in 1966. Using the underpinnings of a Spitfire roadster, Triumph engineers shoe-horned a 1998cc straight-six under a new power-bulged bonnet, providing the GT6 with a point of differentiation against its main competition, the four-cylinder, 1.8 litre MGB. Tuned to produce 95bhp, the six proved to be very smooth in comparison with the rather gruff four-cylinder units found in contemporary small British cars. The six was matched to a stronger Herald four-speed manual 'box, with an optional overdrive. What was also shared with the Herald was a derivative of its controversial swing-axle suspension setup, which was refined in the Mk2 version of the GT6 in 1968. Rotoflex couplings were added to the design and the engine output rose to 104bhp, among various other detail improvements. The GT6 was further updated with 1970's Mk 3, before bowing out in 1973.
