Description

Rover's lovely 3500 P6B, one of the first executive sports saloons, was the V8-powered variant of the innovative four-cylinder P6, itself launched to general acclaim in October 1963. Voted European Car of the Year in 1964, the P6 has an advanced unibody design with an inner skeleton of stressed steel, to which the outer panels and mechanicals were bolted on. The Rover employs a De Dion rear end to give it a sophisticated ride, four-wheel disc brakes and crisply modern styling by the talented David Bache. Proving a hit with middle class professionals, Rover broadened the appeal of the 2000 series when it was discovered the alloy block 3.5-litre V8, already fitted to the P5B, would slot neatly into the P6's engine bay. With only a minor weight penalty over the four-cylinder engine, the V8 developed substantially more power that, combined with stiffer springs, larger shock absorbers and bigger front disc brakes, made the Rover a serious freeway burner. Sold initially as an automatic only, with a Borg Warner 35 unit, a manual was later introduced as well. Comfortable, with superb solid build quality and excellent period performance, the Rover 3500 is a very enjoyable and achievable way to get into classic collecting. Parts are plentiful, the cars are simple to work on and are still capable of being used on a daily basis.

History

  • Two-owner Rover 3500 V8
  • NZ-built, imported new into Australia
  • Partial restoration
  • Amazing receipt & reference files
  • No reserve
Built by BMC New Zealand from a CKD kit in 1976, the last year of Rover 3500 production, this P6B V8 was sold new and first registered in Victoria (ABS-478) in 1978. It was purchased by the current owner in 1987 and used as the family car until around 2010, when it underwent a partial restoration. Finished in 2012, the Rover was re-registered (XWE-225) until 2014, when it went on club plates and has been used for club events since. It’s painted a distinctive and very period Flamenco Orange with contrasting black vinyl Rear C pillars, all in good condition for its age, as is the exterior brightwork. Inside, the cabin was retrimmed during the restoration by Andrew Muirhead in beige Scottish Leather, with a new UK carpet set fitted, and the wood veneer door cappings and glove box lockers replaced to original specifications. All window seal and door rubbers were replaced, and to make the Rover a bit more useable, central locking with a wireless remote was fitted. Mechanically the SU carburettors were overhauled, a Hall-effect electronic ignition was fitted, as was a Bosch 85A alternator, while the suspension bushes and ball joints were replaced. New adjustable Spax shock absorbers were fitted, and the three-speed automatic transmission overhauled. New brakes discs, pads and hoses were also fitted, and the callipers and servo overhauled. A much-loved family car with great collectability, this Rover P6B 3500 V8 is only being sold due to the purchase of an MGB and Triumph project, and subsequent lack of garage space. It will come with its original owner’s manual, spare keys, a large workshop manual, a box of sundry spares (some new), a bound reference / information file and a brilliantly-kept history and receipt file. This Rover P6B 3500 V8 will be offered for sale unregistered and with No Reserve.
