Widely regarded as the most desirable Brock Commodore of them all, the Holden Dealer Team’s VK Group A – dubbed the ‘The Blue Meanie’ by its legion of fans - was launched in March 1985, several months after the SS and Group 3 models. With the move from Group C racing to the international Group A regulations, Holden was forced to de-stroke its V8 engine from 5044cc to 4979cc and produce no less than 500 examples in order to qualify for the new category, thus creating a genuine homologation special. The Holden V8 featured roller rockers, a high-lift camshaft and high-performance exhaust to boost power to a very healthy 268 bhp, making this the most powerful Holden yet. Other features included heavy-duty M21 manual transmission, a limited-slip diff, Group 3 suspension package and 16-inch HDT alloy wheels shod with Bridgestone Potenza 225/50VR-16 rubber. An aggressive body kit consisted of a front air-dam, modified front grille and a boot lid rear spoiler, and each of the individually numbered Group A VKs was finished in the highly distinctive Formula Blue colour scheme, offset by the white Aero wheels. The interior was also upgraded with a Momo steering wheel, Scheel sports seats and a host of other minor changes. Although official build figures for the SS aren’t known, just 200 Group 3 and 500 Group A VK Commodores were made by HDT and ‘Blue Meanies’ have become the most collectible of the Brock-era high-performance Commodores. As the period ads said, “Body by Holden. Soul by Brock.”

  • ‘Blue Meanie’ in great condition
  • Build Number 373
  • Refurbished condition throughout
  • 10,387km believed genuine
  • All the iconic features are there
No doubt about it, Peter Brock’s legacy continues to be felt right across the Australian collector car hobby. Among the many different models produced by Brock’s HDT Special Vehicles Workshops in the 80’s, the VK SS Group A – known to one and all as the ‘Blue Meanie’ – is arguably the most sought - after by enthusiasts, driven by a combination of its liveability and subtle good looks. Our example here is Build Number 373 and it is in great all-round condition, with freshened paint and a tidied interior, so it presents as near-new. It’s got very low indicated kilometres too, 10.387Klms (at time of cataloguing) believed genuine, despite six known owners (one of them for 22 years). These cars offer lots of performance, a modern driving experience, are easy to live with and are always in demand. This Blue Meanie is being sold with its original owner’s manual, some historic documents and receipts, and a spare set of keys. Previously on full Victorian registration, this 1985 example will be offered for sale unregistered.
Note: Shannons advise that all potential buyers research all vehicles before purchase to authenticate originality.
