Following the legendary E-Type was always going to be tough, but the Jaguar XJ-S did it with grace. Originally introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1975, it was based on the XJ saloon and carried on with a derivative of the Series 3 E-Type’s 5.3 litre V12 engine, now on electronic fuel injection. Its spec was brought up to modern luxury standards with niceties such as power windows, locks and climate control. The official factory XJ-S convertible was introduced much later in the model run, in 1988 for the ‘89 model year. Now with anti-lock brakes and a four-speed automatic transmission behind the smooth V12, the convertible added a powered hood with integrated glass rear window (including demister) to an already opulent spec, replacing the earlier XJ-SC Cabriolet design. Upon its release, it was officially the most expensive Jaguar ever offered for sale. These days, the XJ-S has stepped out of the shadows of the E-Type to become a classic, as people come to appreciate its blend of sophistication, power and poise.
