1964 Holden EH 'Modified' Utility

The EH has long been regarded as something of a milestone in the history of General Motors Holden, bringing with it the biggest mechanical change since the 48-215 in the form of an entirely new engine. Now available in two capacities, the red engine (so-called as the cylinder blocks were painted this colour) had hydraulic valve lifters and seven-bearing crankshaft for smoother operation, more power and improved fuel economy. Other improvements included recirculating ball steering, four-wheel hydraulic brakes and a choice of either three-speed column-change manual or Hydramatic automatic transmission. Holden freshened up the styling on the EH with the new look described as 'Power Swept' and the basic sedan was joined by a station wagon, panel van and coupe utility. The ute was sold only in 149-cid form and had a 10 cwt. payload capacity, with heavy-duty tonneau and full-width bench seat as standard equipment. The load area had a double floor and was made of laminated hardwood with steel skid strips, a combination that was both practical and durable. The vehicle of choice for tradies in the early ‘60s, the EH utility has a devoted following today, keeping values strong and restored examples are keenly sought after.
