Launched in 1929, Harley-Davidson's new 'flathead' 45-inch V-twin engine proved to be one of the most significant and enduring models to emerge from Milwaukee.  Initially sold as the D, DS (sidecar), DL (high compression sports solo) and DLD (Special Sports Solo), the Harley's new V-twin developed around 22hp and had a top speed of approximately 65mph.  Designed by engineer Arthur Constantine, the 'flathead' motor was intended as a competitor for the Indian 101 Scout and Excelsior's Super X.  Early Ds used a frame similar to the existing singles but its limitations were quickly recognised and a sturdy new frame with better ground clearance and lower saddle position soon introduced. The Model D's styling, with twin bullet headlamps, certainly looked the part and the location of its vertical generator resulted in the nickname “The Three Cylinder Harley”.  A couple of years later Harley introduced a heavily revised Model R, featuring aluminium pistons (with magnesium optional from 1933), a new crankcase designed for better lubrication and a stronger frame.  Launched in the depths of the Great Depression, strong sales from the R-series helped Harley-Davidson survive the lean times.  Even Hollywood star Clark Gable owned an RL45, which no doubt helped the bike’s image with the American public.  The Model R remained in production until 1937, when the ‘45’ underwent further revision to become the Model W and the ‘flathead’ itself continued to power various Harleys until the 1970s.
