A division of Canadian corporation Bombardier (best known as the builder of Ski-Doo snowmobiles), Can-Am was a motorcycle brand launched in 1971 using a version of the Austrian Rotax engine, aimed at the burgeoning motocross and enduro markets. Unveiled in 1973, Can-Am’s first model was the MX series and immediately proved competitive on the dirt track, taking first, second and third places in the 1975 AMA National Motocross Championship (250cc category) thanks to riders like Gary Jones, Marty Tripes and Jim Ellis. Noted for the quality of its componentry (such as Bing carburetors, Mikuni oil pumps, Bosch CID ignition and Trelleborg tyres), the Can-Am incorporated some innovative features, including the adjustable steering head. Marketed as powerful, purposeful and tractable when launched in 1975, the second generation MX-2 was offered in three versions, including 125, 175 and 250cc models, each employing a tubular double loop space frame, Betor long-travel front forks and a trailing arm rear using Girling shocks. Drums brakes operated on both front and rear wheels, the front hub was made of lightweight mag-alloy and the front and rear guards (and fuel tank) were all made from lightweight polyethylene. The Can-Am’s slim-line single-cylinder rotary-valve two-stroke engine was air-cooled and in the case of the 125cc had bore and stroke measurement of 54mm by 54mm. With a compression ratio of 15:1 for a total output of 24 horsepower at 9000 rpm, drive was delivered through a constant mesh six-speed transmission, with straight cut gears for quicker changes. Can-Am bikes have become increasingly collectible over the years, with many restored for vintage enduro and motocross events and MX-2 125cc is one of the rarest variants, remaining in production for a just a single year before being discontinued.
