Harley-Davidson's first Big Twin motorcycle and it's flagship prior to the arrival of the Knucklehead in 1936 was the Model V of 1930. The 74-cid V-twin featured a Schebler carburettor, with fully enclosed valve gear and improved oil circulation while final drive was by a stronger duplex chain. The running gear sat in an improved frame that was lower and stronger than before, while the electrics also came in for some improvement, with better weather protection. Another improvement concerned the wheels, with a new interchangeable quick-release system that made combating punctures less of a hassle. Early issues with unreliability were soon overcome and the V-series went on to sell well for the duration of the 1930s despite the troubled economic conditions of the time, undergoing continuous improvement throughout the decade. The Big Twin was sold in a myriad of different versions, including the low compression solo VD, the high compression VL, VS sidecar model, VLD Special Sport (with TNT motor) and the heavy-duty commercial VFDS. Generally regarded as the one of Harley' finest pre-war motorcycles, the Model V remains an impressive piece of machinery today.
