One of the most flamboyantly styled automobiles in history, the 1959 Cadillac Convertible has gone down in history as the automotive equivalent of Marilyn Monroe - drop dead gorgeous, totally over the top and never to be repeated. Standard equipment for all 1959 Cadillacs included power steering, power brakes, Hydra-matic automatic transmission and a new, improved 390-cid V8 developing 325 hp at 4800rpm thanks to a four-barrel carburettor and dual exhausts. The 1959 Cadillac Series 62 came with an impressive list of equipment befitting the ultimate in luxury transport, including power brakes, power steering, automatic transmission, vanity mirror, external rear view mirror, two-speed wipers, twin back-up lamps and an electric antenna. The Series 62 model was sold in five different body styles, including the 'flat top' four-window Hardtop Sedan offered here, catalogued with body style number 6239A and 14,138 were built, making it the third most popular style after the regular six-window Sedan and the Hardtop Coupe. As an automotive icon, the '59 Cadillac has few peers, inspiring countless paintings and sculptures, been immortalised in film and celebrated in numerous industrial design exhibitions around the world. Arguably the most sought-after American car of the Chrome Age, the '59 Cadillac perfectly embodies the era of excess.
