The Porsche 911 is one of the all time classic sports cars, combining brilliant handling, exceptional acceleration and strong performance with robust mechanicals and typically Germanic build quality. The idiosyncratic layout, with the air-cooled flat six hung out over the rear wheels, endowed the 911 with a practical cabin capable of seating four at a pinch while the driving position and ergonomics were light years ahead of the Italian exotics. The 911 underwent constant development over the years - the boxer motor grew from the original 2-litre capacity through 2.2 and 2.4 versions, along with a myriad of other technical revisions. In 1974, the G-series 911 saw some major improvements, including the more powerful 2.7-litre motor across the range, Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection for better economy and revised bodywork, with energy-absorbing bumpers. The bodyshell was now fully galvanised for vastly improved protection against rust, while the interior was also revised with better ventilation, along with a new type of door locking mechanism to discourage thieves. The 911 has long been considered one of the finest driver's cars ever made and values of early examples are now rapidly increasing, with the mid-Seventies models now rightly regarded as the bargains of the 911 family, offering more useable performance, practicality and reliability than earlier examples.
