Description

The final major new model released by Chevrolet before the war arrived in 1937, with a new, much improved box-girder frame and more powerful version of the venerable Blue Flame six under the bonnet. Under the direction of Harley Earl, who wanted a ?Baby Cadillac? look, Chevrolet updated the Master Six for 1939 with new, longer bonnets, fenders, running boards and wheels to create a more harmonious, streamlined appearance. The headlamps were mounted atop the front fenders while the rear light cluster incorporated a stop light for the first time, while the boot was better integrated on all body styles. The Master series came in two trim levels, the basic model or the better equipped Master Deluxe, with bumper bars as standard, twin tail lights and Knee-Action coil sprung front suspension for a better ride. All 1939 Chevrolets had improved suspension, with rubber-bushes up front and double-acting rear shock absorbers. The Deluxe models added a few variations to the coupe and sedan body styles, while the convertible was dropped and a station wagon appeared for the first time. A vacuum-assisted column-mounted gearchange was a $10.00 option on all 1939 Chevrolets. With overall production rising 24.1 per cent, Chevrolet retained the all-important Number One spot on the sales chart for 1939.
