The Galaxie was Ford's intermediate level full-size model and for 1965, underwent a major restyle, emerging with sharp, clean lines largely devoid of excessive chrome ornamentation and was characterised by stacked headlamps. Billed as "the newest since 1949", the 1965 Galaxie had more luxury features, a new interior and, for the first time, coil sprung rear suspension, dramatically improving the ride. Ford Australia began assembling Galaxies for the first time in 1965 at the Homebush plant in Sydney, the locally-assembled model differing from its US counterpart in several ways. Designated the GE series, the Aussie-made 1965 Galaxies were only sold here in sedan guise whereas the Americans were offered a range that included convertibles and 2-door hardtops. Local buyers were given a choice of the 289-cid or 390-cid V8s, a woodgrain RHD dash (based on the 1963 Lincoln Continental), power steering and power brakes and all featured 3-speed Cruise-O-Matic transmission. The Galaxie proved popular with business leaders, politicians and farmers for whom a big, powerful American car carried a certain cache. According to Ford Australia's own figures, just 4,892 Galaxies were built locally in 1965-1972 before the model was dropped in favour of the Fairlane/LTD range and only 1,308 of these were manufactured in 1965.
