GN was the result of two English gentlemen- H.R Godfrey and Archibald Frazer-Nash- who went into the business of producing cycle cars for British roads in 1910. Initially powered by brought-in V-Twin engines, an 1100cc engine of GN's own design was installed from 1911, and some 200 examples were finished before production stopped during World War 1. In 1919 production recommenced and the company was acquired by British Gregoire Limited. Here, the chassis was changed from wood to steel and the company became stronger by licensing out the design to French company Salmson. As quickly as they expanded, so the market for cycle cars waned. Another new owner wanted to increase production further and added a shaft-drive, four-cylinder car for 1922. It was during this year that both company founders left to pursue other interests. By the end of 1923 GN had stopped production with around 4200 total production.
