The full-size Ford E-Series range of vans and utilities was introduced to the North American market in 1961 and is still in production today.
Initially based on the American Ford Falcon it was designed to compete with rear-engined contemporary offerings from Volkswagen and Chevrolet in particular. The first-generation E-Series (known then as the Econoline) had a range of inline six-cylinder motors (initially the Falcon's 144cu in, followed by 170 and 240cu in versions) that were situated underneath and behind the front seats.
It was an immediate sales success, its engine location prompting other manufacturers to copy the design for their own updated model lines.
The first generation Econoline ran until 1967 and is affectionately known as the 'Flat Nose'.
