Description
British manufacturer Austin introduced their 12 hp model in 1921. Also known as the 12/4 it was the second post- World War 1 model to be introduced under the Austin badge and was designed to sit beneath the larger 20/4 which arrived in 1919.
1926 saw the only key mechanical change, with an enlargement in engine capacity from 1661cc to 1861cc. These engines were well respected in the day for being virtually unburstable and continue to enjoy a solid reputation in vintage circles today.
Initially available solely as a Tourer, as the popularity of the model grew more bodystyles came on-stream. As prosperity began to flow, so the larger saloon bodies were adopted, the 'Iver' being a four-door limousine that could be supplied with an in-built division separating the front and rear of the vehicle.
The 12/4 range continued in series production until 1935, with a taxi version continuing through to 1939.
