The original Morgan 4/4 (first designated 4-4), was Morgan's first ever four-wheeled vehicle, previous Morgan cars housing only three. First designed in 1935 with production commencing in 1936, the 4/4 is still in production today and holds the record for the longest continually produced production car in history.

Originally the 4-4 was a two-seat roadster however a more practical four-seat version was quickly introduced in 1937, a drop-head coupe joining the range in 1938.

You have to fast-forward to 1955 for the introduction of the second-generation car, now the 4/4, which used the more modern chassis of the Plus-4.

From this point the updates to production became more rampant, and a further three series were introduced by 1963. This fifth-series ran until 1968, whereupon it was replaced with the simpler title of 4/4 1600, which lasted until 1993.

The 1600 offered two and four-seat roadster bodies and initially ran versions of the Ford Kent 1600cc 'four' mated to a four-speed manual Ford 'box. Interestingly a Fiat 1600 was also offered (with five-speed), 96 examples being fitted with this driveline between 1982-85. The Fiat-powered 4/4s were produced alongside an updated Ford motor known as the CVH, which carried the 1600 production through to its end in 1993 (by which time it was fuel injected and five-speed), before the 4/4 1800 took over.

As the longest serving of the 4/4 range the 1600s were the most plentiful with 5448 made during its 25 year production run, including 96 with the Fiat running gear.
