Description
Although the Clipper name had first been seen on the 1941 Packard model list, it was to be put on ice for the period 1948-1952 while Packard went through a transitional phase. With the appointment of James Nance as the new Packard President in 1952, the Clipper name was re-introduced, essentially to restore the Packard name to higher-end machinery only, leaving the Clipper range to the lower-end markets. Two and four-door sedans were available in either Standard or Deluxe trim and were powered by the entry-spec 288ci 150hp Straight-Eight or the larger 327cu 165hp in the Deluxe. Nance had wanted to introduce Clipper as a marque in its own right, using it for a replacement for the mid-price models such as the Packard 200. However, dealer backlash led Nance to a compromise; he would roll out the Clipper name, but initially only as a model designation- the Packard name would remain on the cars until 1956.
