The Oldsmobile name returned to the Australian market in 1918 after an absence of 12 years. Their return sought to attract the lucrative low-medium price range market rather than the higher-end segment they had begun to chase in earlier years. By 1923 they had fully hit their stride with a range of four, six and eight-cylinder vehicles, and it was at the end of that year that Olds signed an agreement with Holden's Motor Body Builders to produce Australian-made bodies that would mate to the imported Olds chassis. This allowed Oldsmobile to reduce their importation costs significantly and give them further competitive pricing and cachet with the locals who appreciated the added local business. The subsequent locally assembled 30 series proved a hit from the commencement of the agreement; however the process was stalled in 1929 when the Great Depression took hold in North America. Olds suspended the agreement for five years until market sentiment recovered in the mid-Thirties and a new generation of Australian-bodied Oldsmobiles was born.
