Still producing vehicles in 2012, the story of American LaFrance is truly historical. Believed to have roots dating back to the mid-19th century and the manufacture of hand and horse drawn fire fighting equipment, the definitive American LaFrance Fire Engine Company was formed in 1903. Its first motorised fire engine debuted in 1907, and by the next decade their fire fighting range was in use across America and Canada. A mighty 14-litre, six-cylinder engine chain-drove the wheels. Several chassis were available and worked across several disciplines in addition to the fire services. The company also provided other products such as ambulances and tankers, along with non-vehicle equipment provided to the construction and airport services industries. In 1995 the company was bought by a division of Daimler AG, Freightliner, who then transferred ownership to a New York-based investment company in 2005. 2008 saw the company file for bankruptcy but to its credit it has re-emerged from this with a new plan that has allowed them to continue production moving forward.
