The early sixties was a wonderful time for American Car enthusiasts and as the baby boomers reached maturity the big local manufacturers saw an opportunity to cash in, creating wildly styled, powerful machines to entice the public in droves.

Ford ushered in the 'Pony Car' era when it introduced the Mustang during 1964 and it became the fastest selling newly introduced model in history during its first year of production.

The key to its success was not only its styling- 2-door, long bonnet, short boot- but the fact that it could be ordered with such a plethora of engine/transmission/trim options- it could satisfy a massive cross-section of potential purchasers.

The initial body styling (available in Coupe, Fastback and Convertible forms) was refreshed in 1967, giving it a slightly more grown-up feel. By 1969 the chassis was re-bodied and the Mustang moved into the seventies.

Today, American muscle enthusiasts lust after these early body 'Stangs. Though a 170ci Six was available, it is the V8s that set pulses racing. Available initially in 260ci form the Windsor small-block was quickly upsized to 289ci and offered from the factory with up to 271bhp. By '67 a 390-cube big-block was also available, though it is the sweet-spinning 289 that is most regularly seen on Australian shores.
