The sixth-generation C4 Corvette was launched to great acclaim in 1984, with great looks and excellent handling the two areas coming in for the most praise - indeed, Car and Driver magazine went so far as to describe the Corvette as "the most advanced production car on the planet". With rack and pinion steering, four-wheel disc brakes and forged-aluminium suspension arms the Corvette was certainly a big improvement on the outgoing C3 and the bodyshell was very aerodynamic whilst retaining traditional Corvette styling cues. The Corvette was still powered by the 5.7-litre V8, with Tuned Port Injection introduced in 1985. One unusual feature was the availability of a four-plus-three-speed transmission with computer-controlled overdrive on the top three gears. In 1986, ABS was standardised on the braking system and the long anticipated return of a convertible body style to the line-up. Changes for 1987 included roller hydraulic lifters, boosting horsepower to 240 at 4,000rpm then for 1988 a new camshaft and modified aluminium cylinder heads helped the engine breathe a little easier.. By the end of the Eighties, the C4 had matured into a sophisticated, stylish package - the bang for the buck factor still very much the Corvette's trump card.
