It's hard to believe the 911 was launched more than four decades ago, but at the time of its arrival in 1963 the latest Porsche was hailed as a masterpiece and has become an enduring motoring legend. Retaining the rear-engined layout of its predecessor, the 356, the air-cooled, horizontally opposed engine now had six cylinders but the rest of the 911 was entirely new, with monocoque construction and styling that has become one the most widely recognised sports car shapes ever created. The 911 may have remained outwardly similar for the next twenty-five years but underneath, a great many technical developments ensured the Porsche kept pace with its rivals. In 1984, the 911SC gave way to the Carrera 3.2 with a larger, more powerful engine (up by 30 bhp) using the latest Bosch Motoronic 2 DME engine management system and LE-Jetronic fuel injection. This was available in traditional Coupe and Cabriolet forms. Also available was the Turbo-look 'Widebody' shell that gave the Carrera wider hips and a Whale Tail. Other changes included a power brake booster and bigger discs while externally, the Carrera had a new front air dam (with integrated fog lights). The 911 is a timeless classic that many consider to be the best sports car ever made. In Carrera 3.2 guise, you have the last of the original style 911s, before the 964 - with heavily revised styling - appeared in 1989. Best of all, the Carrera 3.2 is a genuine bargain. It's a great time to buy one and they offer so much more performance, not to mention reliability and creature comforts, than the more fancied - and vastly more expensive - 911s of the chrome-bumper era.
