Holden's long-lived 304/308 cubic inch (5.0 litre) V8 engine was originally going to be dropped for 1986's VL model range. Rising economy and emissions concerns and the advent of the 3.0 litre turbocharged Nissan six-cylinder motor meant Holden brass could see no real future for the old-tech pushrod V8, which would need to be re-engineered to accept unleaded fuel. Thankfully, media and public backlash led to the 5.0 receiving a stay of execution, and Holden re-released the V8 to the market in October 1986. Adapted to unleaded and using larger valves from the VK Group A, the motor breathed through a four-barrel Rochester carburettor and produced 122kw and 323Nm torque, best utilised behind the three-speed auto transmission. It made most sense in the up-spec Calais, its lazy cruising ability a perfect match for the car with its upgraded trim, power steering/windows/mirrors and air-conditioning.
