The W126 S-class coupe, known as the SEC, was designed by the legendary Italian designer Bruno Sacco. Introduced in 1981 on a shortened (by 85mm) S-class sedan wheelbase, only 74,060 SECs were produced over a ten-year model run. Being the Mercedes executive flagship of the eighties, it is the quality of the build that most impresses, and which makes them so appealing to run as a classic motor today. On top of that the list of available equipment is extraordinary; cruise and climate controls, ABS, Traction control, memory seats, LSD, power steering, and EFI may be widely available today but were truly high-end when the SEC was new. The 500 SEC utilised a 4973cc V-8 motor and was the popular pick on European roads, being around 300kg lighter than the larger engined 560 model. Lorinser and AMG upgrades were also offered at several dealers to allow owners the opportunity to add individual style to these high-end Mercs.
