Description
Ford's Mach 1 iteration of the famous Mustang was introduced in 1969 as a stepping stone that sat between the everyday Mustangs and the super-performance BOSS machines. As with any 'Stang a range of motors were offered, beginning with the two-barrel 351 and progressing through to a four-barrel version. From there, a big-block displacing 390ci was available, but the ultimate version (in a straight-line at least) was the 428ci Cobra Jet with 335 advertised horsepower.
The Mach 1 received specific body and interior treatments (including, for 1970, the single long black or white bonnet stripe to go with specific bucket seats and wood-effect trim) along with a higher spring rate/performance damper suspension setup over the standard cars.
For 1970 the M-code four-barrel Cleveland 351 replaced the previous Windsor 4V, though the two-barrel (H-code) continued in Windsor form for several months afterward before it too was replaced with a Cleveland. The former produced 300bhp, up from 290, while the latter was rated at 250bhp in either form.
