The original Topolino - Italian for little mouse - was introduced in 1936 as Fiat's answer to the Austin Seven and was similarly aimed at bringing motoring to the masses. Designed by Dante Giacosa, the Topolino - or Tipo 500 as it was properly designated - was cute, characterful and immensely popular. In 1948 the original model was uprated to become the 500B, the original side-valve engine giving way to new overhead-valve s. Developing a heady 16.5 hp, the 500B had upgraded brakes, suspension, clutch and gearbox and a total of 21,000 were built before the 500C, with modernised bodywork but largely unchanged mechanicals, was launched in 1949. Built as a two-seater, the Topolino was available with a variety of body styles but the most popular - as found on the car offered here - was the versatile saloon. Today any Topolino is a rare sight on Australian roads but they remain extremely popular, particularly in Melbourne with such a rich Italian heritage and a strong club scene for the Fiat marque.
