The first generation of America's only sports car, the Corvette, had undergone a number of significant changes by the early 1960s, with revised styling and the introduction of the classic small-block V8 in 1955 which endowed the car with performance to match the exciting exterior. For 1961, when the Corvette on offer was built, exterior styling was further enhanced with the removal of the 'teeth' in the grille and a dramatic 'boat tail' rear end with four tail lights. Under the bonnet sat Chevrolet's classic small block V8, displacing 283-cid and developing 230 hp at 4800 rpm. Power options included the 245 hp dual four-barrel and the 315 hp Rochester blue injected versions. Standard transmission was a three-speed manual box, with a four-speed or Powerglide auto optional. Inside, Chevrolet added more standard equipment, with sun visors, windscreen washers, a courtesy light and parking brake alarm now all included in the base price of $3,934. The last of the solid axle Corvettes in 1961-1962 are sought after for their glamorous image and healthy performance.
