Ford's new Flathead V-8 was introduced in 1932 and proved an immediate success, the combination of effortless performance, refinement and safety features representing a big advance over earlier Fords. In 1933, Ford brought out a more powerful version of the V-8, with 75 hp thanks to a new aluminium head with 6.3:1 compression ratio, along with a new ignition system. Underneath, a new double-drop chassis frame gave a much better ride and the wheelbase was stretched to 112-inches for more interior space. Edsel Ford oversaw the switch to a more streamlined body style for 1933, with sloping radiator grille and windscreen hinting at the aerodynamic trends to come. Amongst the usual body styles, including the sedan and convertibles, Ford offered a station wagon body in timber, as fashion dictated. Although the preserve of wealthy families when new, "Woody" wagons became cult objects in the late 1950s and 1960s as a new generation of young surfers began using them as transport to the beach. With innumerable references in popular culture of the day, the "Woody" was immortalised by the likes of the Beach Boys in their song "Let's go Surfing" and have now become sought after collector's items around the world.
