In production from April 1966 until January 1968, the HR Holden was a clever update of the existing HD, with revised styling and clean, modern lines that still look good today. With wider track and lower overall height, revised suspension and lower profile tyres, the HR's handling was a big improvement, with a better ride as well. Mechanical changes included two new versions of the red engine, the base 161-cid unit supplemented by the optional 186-cid motor developing 145 bhp, and both were significantly quieter and smoother in their operation. Holden offered the choice of Powerglide automatic transmission or a three-speed manual gearbox and a free-flow exhaust system was also new. The HR range of Standard, Special and Premier models received updated interiors and the long list of optional extras included a limited-slip diff, power disc brakes, power steering, a tinted windscreen and two-tone paint. Holden's marketing described the HR as "Turbo-Smooth" and good examples of the model are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
