Although Ferrari had built small numbers of four-seater cars prior to the introduction of the 250 GTE in 1960, the new 2+2 model was the first time a production car bearing the Prancing Horse was made in serious volume. The 250 GTE proved a resounding success, with just under 1,000 built in a four year period, making it by far the biggest selling model built by the small Italian company at that time. By 1964, Ferrari was effectively phasing out the venerable 250 V12 models, almost simultaneously replacing the 250 Lusso with the 275 GTB and GTS, and the 250 GTE with the 330 GT. In fact, a small number (50 cars) of interim 330 Americas, combining the enlarged 4-litre 330 engine in the older GTE body were made in 1963, before the restyled 330 took over the following year. Again masterfully designed by Pininfarina, the elegant 330 GT 2+2 was built on a tubular steel chassis derived from the GTE but with an additional 50 mm in the wheelbase, along with adjustable Koni shock absorbers. The Tipo 209 4-litre V12 engine had single overhead cam per bank, triple Weber 40DCZ/6 carburettors and was rated at 300 bhp at 6600 rpm, with an 8.8:1 compression ratio. Most of the Series 1 cars built until 1965 had a four-speed manual gearbox with electric overdrive. Although not as overtly sporting as the 275 GTB, the 330's outstanding torque endowed it with serious performance and the 0-100 dash took just 6.3 seconds on the way to a top speed of around 250 km/h, very respectable figures in 1964. In total, 627 four-headlight Series 1 330 GT 2+2s were made between 1964 and 1965, of which 503 had the four-speed 'box and just 50 of those came with right-hand drive, making this a very rare, very special early Ferrari indeed.
