The Flying Lady has come to symbolise the pinnacle of automotive achievement and the Silver Shadow was perhaps the most significant Rolls-Royce since the legendary Silver Ghost of almost six decades earlier. Bringing the Crewe company into the modern era, the Silver Shadow of 1965 saw the adoption of unitary construction, disc brakes and independent suspension all round (with hydraulic self-levelling) were clothed in modern, conservative styling that has aged well. Although the exterior changed little, the Silver Shadow underwent constant development over the years - the engine was expanded to 6.7-litres in 1970, a new suspension system with radial-ply tyres to improve handling and directional stability then ventilated disc brakes in 1973. The electrics were modernised, with central door and boot locking in 1972, the steering wheel was reduced in size and the steering ratio increased for more responsive feel. In 1974 wider, lower profile tyres were fitted for better cornering and reduced road noise, recognisable from the slight flaring of the wheel-arches. The press certainly admired the Silver Shadow, with the Autocar describing the model as "A Car of Majestic Nobility". Long undervalued, the Silver Shadow is certain to show steady appreciation in years to come.
