Epitomising the affordable British sports car, the MGB remained production for the best part of two decades and was a sales hit around the world. With attractive styling and willing performance, the MGB had universal appeal and more than half a million were sold by the time the final example rolled off the production line in 1980. With unitary construction for greater rigidity and lightness, the MGB was powered by the torquey 1.8-litre B-series engine driving through a four-speed gearbox and could top 100mph where conditions allowed. In 1967, the MGB underwent several changes including a stronger five-bearing engine, all-synchromesh gearbox, better electrics with an alternator replacing the dynamo and revised rear suspension. Most agree these Mark II cars offering a better driving experience whilst retaining the purity of the original styling, something lost on later rubber bumper models. For 1969, further changes included new seats, Rostyle wheels, a smaller steering wheel and a matt black grille. With enormous support from clubs, specialists and fellow enthusiasts, ownership of an MGB has never been more enjoyable and good examples will always remain in demand.
