Replacing the EJ in August 1963, the EH was the eighth new Holden since the introduction of the original 48-215 back in 1948, bringing with it the most dramatic mechanical development so far in the form of a new engine. Out went the old grey motor, the new red unit (identified by the colour of the cylinder block) heralding a new era, with more power and smoother operation. Available in either 149-cid or 179-cid displacements (with 100bhp and 115bhp respectively), the red engine had hydraulic valve lifters and seven-bearing crankshaft that not only improved top speed and acceleration, but offered better fuel economy as well. The EH also came with recirculating ball steering, four-wheel hydraulic brakes plus a choice of transmissions - there was a three-speed column shift manual or Hydramatic for those who didn't like changing gears. To accompany all the technical changes, the styling of the EH was also new - Stan Parker of the Design and Technical Centre in Detroit was responsible for the ?power swept? look with squared-off roofline and vertical tail lamps. Holden expanded the range to include the base (Standard) model, intermediate Special Sedan and upmarket Premier, along with all the usual commercial variants. The EH was certainly a sales success, becoming the first Holden to surpass 250,000 units and has built up a really strong following over the years, keeping prices strong.
